For the parents and students of Palm Lane Elementary School, it has been a long road since the summer of 2014, when they began collecting signatures for a Parent trigger Law petition to convert the school to charter status. What followed was three years of trench warfare with the public school unions, the district superintendent and the Anaheim Elementary School District Board of Education – which tried to sabotage the petition verification process and spent nearly a million dollars vainly battling the parents group in court. There was even a last-minute, back-room attempt by anti-charter Councilman Jose F. Moreno – facilitated by Mayor Tom Tait – to hijack the charter operator selection process from the parent petitioners.
The parents and their children were ultimately vindicated in the courts and the new Palm Lane Charter School is opening its doors. Students will be educated in a STEAM-focused curriculum and the school will be operated by New Century Charter Schools. This Saturday, August 11, the school will hold a Grand Opening Fiesta to celebrate the beginning of this new chapter; from the Palm Lane Charter School:
The families of Palm Lane Charter School are excited to begin the next chapter in the Palm Lane Elementary story. Palm Lane Elementary was converted to a charter school under California’s “parent trigger law.” The Board, Administration and Families of Palm Lane Elementary Charter School will celebrate their opening with an inauguration and welcoming on August 11, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
A revitalized Palm Lane, with Dr. Sagui Doering at the helm, begins classes with a new STEAM focused curriculum in a Project-based learning environment starting August 13, 2018. Dr. Doering comes from Samueli Academy as their former Dean of Students and Student Development Coordinator. With her Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership, Administration and Policy, as well as an extensive background in K-12 teaching and administration, Palm Lane families could not be more thrilled to have this educational powerhouse leading their charter school.
Dr. Doering and her staff understand the importance of staying true to a vision and mission of quality educational experiences for all children, and know that when heart, dedication, passion, “ganas” (desire) and competence serve as the fuel for action, the possibilities are endless.
Please come join our Palm Lane Charter School families, Saturday, August 11, 2018 to celebrate our success!
Alone among media of any kind, Anaheim Blog has chronicled the Palm Lane parents’ struggle from the beginning, and it’s gratifying to see these families – at least, those whose children haven’t already aged out – finally have the opportunity to send their kids to the charter school they fought for years to create.
