Anaheim Mayor 2018: Lorri Galloway To Announce Candidacy On October 11

Former Anaheim Councilwoman Lorri Galloway is the latest to join the fray in the race to succeed Mayor Tom Tait, who is termed out in 2018.

Galloway will make her formal announcement tomorrow at noon in front of Anaheim City Hall. She filed her formal candidacy paperwork yesterday, October 9. According to the media advisory released yeterday by her campaign:

On Wednesday, October 11th, former Anaheim City Councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tem Lorri Galloway will gather with supporters on the steps of City Hall to make a major announcement regarding her plans for Anaheim.

In addition to being a two-term councilwoman, Galloway is the founder and Executive Director of the Eli Home for Abused Children, a Presidential Citation-winning non-profit that provides housing, counseling, and support services to homeless victims of child abuse and domestic violence. A 45-year Anaheim resident, Galloway has made combating the homelessness crisis, fighting for an economy that benefits everyone, and confronting the scourge of crime and gang violence key themes of her time in public service.

Her campaign is being managed by the Dewey Square Group, a progressive consulting firm with offices in Sacramento and other parts of the country.

Galloway is a Democrat and was elected to two terms on the Anaheim City Council, serving from 2004 to 2012. During her tenure, she was an advocate for affordable housing policies such as inclusionary housing, but was also considered a pragmatist who could work with various parties to arrive at a compromise.

She and Mayor Tait voted against the original GardenWalk hotel deal in 2012 and the subsequent effort to require voter approval for using Transient Occupancy Tax rebates to attract 4-Diamond hotel construction in the Anaheim Resort. These events precipitated the Great Schism in Anaheim politics that continues today.

Galloway challenged Tait for re-election in 2014, finishing in second with 20.4% of the vote:

Galloway finished first during her maiden council run in 2004 with 18.8%, and was re-elected in 2006 with 22.6%.

Galloway is the second Democrat woman from Anaheim Hills to jump into the mayoral contest. Progressive Democrat Ashleigh Aitken entered the race in June and raised $183,000 by the end of the month. According to sources, the Aitken fundraising machine aims to bank $500,000 by the end of 2017.

Galloway has something Aitken does not: name ID and the experience of running three city-wide campaigns – two of which were successful.  Galloway spent $100,000 to post 20.4% against a popular incumbent mayor in 2014. However, she was also the only Democrat in that race and will be competing with Aitken for support from at least some of the same sources of funding and political support.

Also running are Republican and former Anaheim Councilman Harry Sidhu, who has already raised more than $200,000; and GOP businessman and Anaheim Boys and Girls Club Executive Director John Machiaverna. With Galloway’s entry, the 2018 mayoral contest is shaping up to be the most competitive since 2002, when Curt Pringle defeated Mayor Pro Tem Frank Feldhaus, Councilwoman Lucille Kring and La Habra Police Chief Steve Staveley (who had the backing of then-Mayor Tom Daly and the OC Democratic Party).

Given the presence of several credible mayoral candidates, Galloway’s 18%-22% benchmark isn’t a bad place to start.
