It wasn’t a matter of if, but of when AD68 hopeful Deborah Pauly would be hit for her drunk driving arrest several months ago, in September 2015. The abrasive former Villa Park Councilwoman was arrested after driving onto the curb at 1:30 a.m. in Anaheim.
One of her rivals in the race to succeed Assemblyman Don Wagner, former Anaheim Councilman Harry Sidhu, has sent out this mailer hitting Pauly hard for the DUI:
The Sidhu campaign not only hits her for her own DUI, but for an earlier incident in which her husband was also arrested for drunk driving – and during which an intoxicated Deborah Pauly reportedly became belligerent with the police.
“What will her excuse be next time she drinks too much and gets behind the wheel?Deborah Pauly needs help, not a promotion”
Candidates have survived DUI-related scandals and been elected in spite of them – but in cases involving incidents that were many years old. Voters tend to forgive candidates for ancient mistakes if they have subsequently straightened up and flown right.
However, Pauly’s drunk driving arrest is only a few months old and hasn’t even come to trial yet. Voters may not be as forgiving when they believe they have better alternatives available to them.
